In all truth, I do not think that religion is a waste of time, but for the sake of debating, I shall argue the opposite.
My argument is plainly for the sake of practising my debating skills, and in no way do I mean to offend anyone by it.
When the modern form of Homo sapiens came into existence (our ancestors existed approximately six million years ago), we looked up at the sun and the sky, and didn't know what to make of it. Here was this huge sphere of fire that was placed in the equally astonishing sky and it disappeared during one period of time, and reappeared in the next. We naturally thought that it was superior to us, and this is how the concept of God formed- a divine being. When this ball of fire was in the sky, we felt safe and we could see. So, as the human species developed so did the idea of a divine, supernatural spirit. Once we established that the sun was not actually this divine concept, and that it was a ball of fire, we placed this God into the sky, into the heavens, because we still needed to believe that something was superior to us, that something was watching over us. Now, in the present day, we think of the sky as a metaphor for heaven where God is, his home. We started to place our modern theories into this divine concept like, God has no gender. The theory that when humans pass away, they go into heaven also formed. But do people who commit sins deserve to go to the luxurious heaven where God lives? No; so Hell was created (not physically, in our minds). All kinds of religions started to branch of this main 'trunk' that a divine being exists. A famous phenomenon formed in religious studies; the triangle. Why does evil exist if God, a good person is real?
So, on one corner of the triangle was that God was all loving, but he did not have the power to stop evil. The other corner states that God is all powerful, but he wants evil to exist. So, the final corner states that God does not realise evil exists, but is all loving. This is called the inconsistent triad, and is a (long) example of how a divine concept has developed over hundreds of thousands of years.
"But what does this have to do with religion being a waste of time?" you may ask yourself. Well, it shows that if the world started out as a modern society like it is today, religion would not exist. Ony the theory of the Big Bang would, because we would look up at the sky, and the sun and know how they scientifically were formed and in this world. Some of the more basic reasons for why religion is a waste of time is that God has never called to us, no 'miracles' have actually been proven or performed in the present day. Religion was only created when humans weren't as clever as we are today, yet we still believe it today. Those who devote their lives to God are wasting their life, because in life the purpose is to do something influential in a good way. So, religion is a waste of time, because you can see at the beginning of my argument how the idea of God even came to our minds; the fact that we thought of the sun as a divine being, and how this developed into the religions that we have today.
Thank you for reading.

| Speak RoundThis question is asked for thousands of years in press, tv network, media generally & so on. But rarely people bring one fact that I've looked after.
Religion is there to only seperate people from one another. It is made by human to control human. In a simplified way, it is created to manipulate large amounts of people. Nowadays, people are born with The Holy Bible, Tora, Quran and they are hardly given the opportunity to believe in what they choose. They are told to follow everyone so they can "fit in".
How do you manage to manipulate a lot of people in your own interest? Answer is simple, give them something in common that they look up to. My last words are; people follow what they are preached. There are only few who don't go where the path leads and rather go on their own and leave a trail.

| Speak RoundI'm sorry vcnt, but your argument is extremely unclear. It clearly says that you are con for religion being a waste of time, yet you have written your paragraph about a completely different topic- that religion is used for a source of power. You should be giving reasons for why religion is not a waste of time, for example, 'it helps people deal with stress, like the Buddhist practice of mediation'. I have submitted to be your coach, but I cannot help you if this is the quality of your debate. Perhaps you need to write a bibliography of all of the websites you presumably copied and pasted off, because from my point of view you do not understand what you are writing about.
