Random Stranger (CON)To be fair, I think that it would absolutely great if the government gave out free internet. However, the "side effects" that it would create would not create and end that justifies the means.
If the government created free in-home internet, it would completely decimate internet providers. Corporations that provided thousands of jobs would downsize drastically or go bankrupt altogether. The difficult process of hiring back on all of the workers to the government would only result in lower wages for employees in the new system, as government jobs tend to pay less then private sector jobs because tax payers wouldn't stand for it.
This brings me to my second argument. As with public schools, welfare programs, and college financial aid, something can seemingly appear to cost nothing to the public, only to sneak up on them through the magical cover of (drumroll please)... Taxes! Making a middle class family pay so that a lower class family can use a non-necessity such as internet doesn't seem fair. Providing Internet for "free" therefore effectively accomplishes nothing.
Making the internet public would be begging for censorship. I would hope that this would never happen here in the U.S., but in a country without assured free speech, a oppressive government could easily constrict access to political views that opposed theirs, or promote their regime, as happens in North Korea.[1]
