Cellphones have had more influence on this generation's youth, then any other modern day invention. The significance of the cell phone on our culture cannot be ignored. How we handle laws, and the distribution thereof, has the power to shake the very balance of this world. By instituting a legal age for operating cell phones, preferably at age 13, we can impact the world in a positive way.
There are several facts about cell phones that I will center around my arguments.
- The average youth spends more time looking at his or her cellphones than their educator at school.
- Youth who do not have cellphones, are better at upfront social dialogue than those who do have cellphones.
- Youth who do not have cellphones, are more likely to develop unique introverted personality traits.
- Youth who constantly use cellphones, are more likely to fail in school over those who do not.
- Youth who use cellphones run a high risk of obtaining an addiction (some academic sources say the vast majority will develop an addiction)
- Youth with cellphone addictions often suffer depression and insomnia, making it hard for them to hold a job, while also raising the chances for suicide.
Most children obtain their first cellphone around ages 9-12. Age 13 would be the most ideal legal age for cellphones, because children would have already learned healthy habits by participating in the first real life simulated environment, middle school. Middle school is where youth begin to learn advanced social skills, and experience real academic pressure. Throughout most of the world, middle school and high school only differ in the content they teach. Therefore, by age 13, kids will have hopefully learned how to deal with academic and social challenges, before they progress into high school. High School is where kids learn who they want to be, what they want to do, and whether they will be able to do it. There must some resemblance of focus. Allowing our youth to develop poor habits using their cellphones before entering high school, is destructive at best.
Can we sit idly by, while our confused youth dig themselves into a hole they may never got out of? I cannot, which is why I support instituting a legal age for operating cellphones.

| Speak RoundSorry for the late reply, I'm just now seeing this and have 6 minutes to spare.
There should not be a legal age implemented for the use of mobile phones. There are multiple instances where a young child has saved the life of family members in emergency situations from being able to access a mobile phone and use it to call the police or hospital.
If anything, we have the means to properly educate young children on how to effectively use mobile phones, and already are in some instances which I'll expand on further in this debate.
There are bad habits that can be formed from excessive and improper use of nearly anything, including the television. Should we restrict access to the television? No. We merely educate our youth on what is appropriate to watch or not. The same can be said for the case of mobile phones.
Again, I apologize for my lacking round. I will expand into each point further in my next round. I do believe my general position is clear though. I now return the floor to my opponent.
Thank you.

| Speak RoundStag!: You claim that some children have used mobile phones to save lives. Are there special circumstances where kids definitely need phones?

Thanks for accepting Stag, this will be my first debate on this website, although I am pretty familiar with text-based debates due to my time over on DDO. I'm looking forward to debating this topic with you! Posted 2015-01-26 04:18:50
