the word pharmakeai means

  1. the use or the administering of drugs
  2. poisoning
  3. sorcery, magical arts, often found in connection with idolatry and fostered by it
  4. metaph. the deceptions and seductions of idolatry
https://www.biblestudytools.com/lexicons/greek/nas/pharmakeia.html

the word pharmakon means

from pharmakon (a drug)
Definition
a poisoner, sorcerer, magician
NASB Translation

pharmakeai was originally in the bible but it was translated to sorcery in later versions in the bible

jesus said in the end time pharmakeai deceived all nations not sorcery

Parallel Verses
King James Version
And   the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the  voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all  in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy   sorceries were all nations deceived.

most  if not all prescription medication tons of side effects per pill and  these side effects include thoughts to kill yourself puking blood  yellow eyes and skin disturbing weight gain increased. i'm making the  case that the side effects are poision

the  prescription dug Prozac which treats depression causes yellow skin and  eyes' thoughts of suicide 'and 120+ different thing. this drug helps  with depression. it is an anti depressant. but this is the most   hypercritical thing on the planet one of the side effects of taking   this prozac is depression. prozac is an anti depression. so it is sold  to people because it helps with depression then one of the side effect  of taking the pill is depression. so does it help with depression or  does it cause depression. these are not small side effect either here is a small list  blindness' blue-yellow color blindness' 'purple or red spots on the skin'  cool pale skin' yellow skin and  eyes' thoughts of suicide'  'trouble with breathing' etc

why does a drug that helps with depression end up with a side effect that causes depression seems a little counter productive.
. there 120+ side effects let that sink in.

I think the strongest argument for the benefits of prescription medication can be found in a proof by contradiction.

Let's assume you're right. Let's completely ban all prescription medicine and see what happens.

Some people rely on prescription medication to stay alive:
  • Diabetics
  • Organ transplant patients
  • People with dangerous and/or contagious viral/fungal/bacterial infections
  • Cancer patients
  • Autoimmune patients

My opponent presumably believes that there are homeopathic/natural alternatives to all prescription medications. I ask my opponent to show scientific, peer-reviewed, alternative medicines that treat the above disease types.

What would happen to the economy if hundreds of millions of people suddenly stopped showing up to work because they relied on prescription medication to function or live?

What would happen to the crime rate if potentially dangerously unstable people were deprived of their medication?

Yes, it is true that the pharmaceutical industry has problems. Modern medicine isn't perfect and often comes with unfavorable side effects. However, I would argue that the catastrophic effects of eradicating prescription medicine far outweigh the benefits.

Rebuttals

My opponent seems to have a lot of religious references.  I would ask that we keep this debate based on science and evidence. No judge wants to see this become a religious argument.

--
Opponent: "Pharmakeai - a poisoner, sorcerer, magician"

The word Pharmakeai might describe an 11th-century Witch Doctor who treats your infection with bloodletting and cocaine; however, it doesn't describe modern, technologically advanced medicine.

My opponent has gone to great lengths to show that the medical symbol of Rod of Asclepius has a connection to Hermes staff in Greek mythology. So what. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, was Greek. Are you surprised that modern medicine has some ancient Greek symbols? This has zero effect on the world. It is completely irrelevant to this argument.
--

My opponent has pointed out that Prozac, like many prescription drugs, has a long list of potential side effects. Let's look at the actual data for the side effects of Prozac (Fluoxetine) [1]. javascript:nicTemp(); Aside from insomnia, every other side effect occurs less than 15% of the time. Drowsiness, lethargy, and hunger suppression occurs in 10-15% of all patients. Most patients experience mild if no side effects at all. Most of the terrifying side effects you've listed off are so ridiculously rare, that they are deemed statistically insignificant.

Let's imagine that we applied the same logic to taking a flight. Let's list off all the bad things that could go wrong when flying:

  • You could lose your luggage
  • Your flight could be delayed
  • You might get stranded in a foreign country without your passport
  • Your plane might crash on a deserted island, killing all the passengers except you. You manage to survive on nearby fruits for a while, but soon find yourself resorting to cannibalism. You befriend a volleyball named "Wilson" to help you cope, but tragically lose him at sea.
  • You might miss your flight and aren't reimbursed by the airline.
  • You get seated next to a crying baby.

So should we ban air transportation because bad things might happen? No, because that would be silly.  You can make anything look scary by listing off all the bad things in the world that might happen, that's fear-mongering, not science. You have to weigh the likelihood of side effects against the consequences of outlawing prescriptions entirely.

Cross-Examination
tombos21@gmail.com: Can you explain what Greek mythology has to do with prescription medication?
crossed: the word pharmacutical if you look this word up on a dictionary site you will see that the word originated from hte word pharmakon which means poisioning with drugs or whichcraft. this is under the american defenition right under the british one you may have to scroll down a bit to find it https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/pharmaceutical
tombos21@gmail.com: I'm still not seeing how this relates to modern Pharmacology.
crossed: are modern pharma words are derived from words that mean poisoning administering drugs sorcery potion makeing .
tombos21@gmail.com: So your argument is that the word "pharmaceutical" used to have a negative connotation, 2000+ years ago? Why does that mean we should ban all prescription drugs? The etymology of a word doesn't affect anything.

pharmaceutical in British

(ˌfɑːməˈsjuːtɪkəl

of or relating to drugs or pharmacy

nothing to weird but pharmakeus means

who "mixes up distorted religious potions" like a sorcerer-magician.
They try to "work their magic" by performing pseudo "supernatural" stunts, weaving illusions
about the Christian life to use "powerful" religious formulas
("incantations") that manipulate the Lord into granting more temporal
gifts (especially "invincible health and wealth"). This has a
"drugging" effect on the aspiring religious zealot, inducing them to
think they have "special spiritual powers

REBUTTAL

i have already debunked your argument on how you believe  pharmakeai does not connect to modern medicine. so i will shatter his next argument. con seems to have compared bad things happening to the side effects to things that can go wrong on a flight

note 1-6 Americans are on a antidepressant
https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/one-6-americans-take-antidepressants-other-psychiatric-drugs-n695141

prozac is the 6th most prescribed antidepressant
in 2011 over 2 millions prescriptions filled each month
https://www.newsmax.com/health/Health-Wire/most-prescribed-antidepressant-medications/2015/09/02/id/673123/

since con seems to believe bad things potentially happening on a airplane is even comparable to the 120+ potential side effects of the drug Prozac lets compare the two. it was so hard to choose

which is worst

your skin and eyes turning yellow
or
You could lose your luggage

stopping of heart
or
Your flight could be delayed

twitching, twisting, or uncontrolled repetitive movements of the tongue, lips, face, arms, or legs
or
You might get stranded in a foreign country without your passport

blindness
or
You might miss your flight and aren't reimbursed by the airline.

scaly skin
or
You get seated next to a crying baby.

alright i found a bunch of prozac side effect that are equal or close to equal as this one

difficulty with breathing
Cracks in the skin
mood or behavior changes
slurred speech
thoughts of killing oneself

or
  • Your plane might crash on a deserted island, killing all the  passengers except you. You manage to survive on nearby fruits for a  while, but soon find yourself resorting to cannibalism. You befriend a  volleyball named "Wilson" to help you cope, but tragically lose him at  sea.

it is not bad because it is rare

yes some of these drugs are rare but you are bound to get one of these awful things if you take one of these drugs because there are so many side effects. and lets not forget millions of people are taking them which is a lot of people effected from these prescription drugs

in fact over 100 thousand people die from prescription drugs each year and is the fourth leading cause of death in the USA
https://newspunch.com/100000-deaths-per-year-in-the-u-s-caused-by-prescription-drugs/

and prescription drugs are more dangerous than illegal drugs
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/wicked-deeds/201404/prescription-drugs-are-more-deadly-street-drugs
https://www.blvdcenters.org/blog/street-drugs-or-prescription-drugs

people need prescription drugs to function

firstly prescription drugs kill more than the disease that it is trying to prevent i have already pointed out that more than 100 thousand people each year die from this poison. secondly it is evil that these pills create a dependence on them that if you take them you could die. thirdly most pills can be replaced with herbs. and in 2009 its an old article there were 4.6 million cases of people going to the emergency room because of prescription drugs most taken just as prescribed. is 2019 its probely ten times worst then back then

So you've thrown out a lot of red herrings, but I want to stay on point for a moment.

My opponent claims: "prescription drugs kill more than the disease that it is trying to prevent i have already pointed out that more than 100 thousand people each year die from this poison."

  • Insulin is a prescription medication. More than 30 million people have diabetes (in the USA alone), and approximately 7.5 million of them rely on life-sustaining insulin". [2]
  • Antibiotics are prescribed. Penicillin alone (one of hundreds of antibiotics) has already saved over 200 million lives [3]
  • Anti-rejection medication is a prescription. Over 100,000 life-saving organ transplants are performed each year. Every one of these procedures requires anti-rejection medication [4]

I could list off dozens more examples. Surely the millions of lives saved by prescription medication outnumber the thousands of lives lost to it.

I've pointed out we need to compare downsides of potential side-effects to the downsides of banning the drug entirely. Regulatory agencies, like the FDA, compare the likelihood and severity of side effects to the consequences of banning the drug outright. Every regulated prescription drug has passed that test.

Your response to this was that "liberals are getting rid of aeroplanes". (Another red herring)

Claim: Medicine is Sourcery because "Vaccines have baby parts"
No they don't. I would advise you to read the references before submitting them. From your first link [5]:

"This type of anti-vaccine propaganda is likely why so many anti-vaccine folks still think that aborted baby parts and fetal tissue are ingredients in vaccines. They aren’t. Not in any vaccine".

---

Claim: "most pills can be replaced with herbs"

Prove it. Could you please provide scientific, peer-reviewed, effective herbal alternatives for medicine such as insulin, immunosuppressants, and antibiotics?

---

Claim: [Paraphrased] The etymology of the word pharmaceutical implies poisoning and witchcraft, therefore all modern prescription medication is poison.
The word for avocado comes from the Aztec word, "ahuacatl," which means testicle. Should we ban all avocados? The etymology of words is irrelevant.

it first starts by talking about if there is aborted baby tissue in vaccines the they go on to say well even if there a little amount of aborted baby tissues it should be on the ingredients label. it does not say there aborted babies tissue on the label so they say myth debunked there are no aborted babies tissues on the vaccines. then it says that there is only aborted babies cells in the vaccines not any tissues. no joke it goes on a long time about there not being any aborted baby tissue then they say myth debunked then talk about how there aborte babies cells in the vaccines

it does not matter if its aborted babies tissue in vaccines or aborted babies cells. aborted babies in vaccines are bad at any level

no millions have died from prescription medication its the 4th biggest killer in the usa
https://www.collective-evolution.com/2013/11/20/how-pharmaceuticals-came-to-be-the-4th-leading-cause-of-death-in-america/

con uses like the fact that 7.5 million people are on issulin pills and 1.5 million need them to stay alive as people. but these pills ar enot cureing them they are just keeping the disease effects down a bit. some keep them the disease from killing them but herbs would do the same exact thing but without the side effects. its  a real shame that the herb industry has been completely destroyed. it is nearly impossible to by herbs without heavy metals like mercury lead and other stuff in supposed organic herbs. i mean i know the pain its so hard to find clean tumeric and goko powder ginzeg and chamomille flowers.

big pharma making herbal plants illegal
big pharma has made a synthetic version of the herbal plant kratom. but then  make the real kratom plant illegal.

article

The federal government has literally allowed Big Pharma to create
medicine derived from the plant, and then made the plant itself illegal.
It is simply mind-boggling how they can rationalize and justify such
despicable behavior

here are some uses for kratom

pharmaceutical is based off the word pharmakon which means poisoning with drugs.con believes the avocado being based off a word meaning testicle is on the same level
con says The word for avocado comes from the Aztec word, "ahuacatl," which means  testicle. Should we ban all avocados? The etymology of words is  irrelevant.

not if they claim that avocados should help with genital problems. but than they cause flesh eating of the genitals.

big pharma claims to heal people with there drugs. but then they kill people and find out they made there brand off of old words which means poisoning with drugs

he says me comparing the risk of an airplane to what liberals are doing as a green new deal is a red hearing but then compares avocado genital history with prescription medication poisons history

When it comes to matters of life or death we need to base our decisions on science and research, not conspiracy theories, not religion, not "pharmakeai".

Type 1 diabetes is a condition where your body cannot produce insulin, meaning you cannot regulate blood sugar. These herbs claim to slightly lower your blood sugar, none of them replace insulin. No peer-reviewed scientific journal has ever claimed that you can completely cut insulin dependence with herbs and spices. The American Diabetes Association dismisses cinnamon’s use in diabetes treatment  javascript:nicTemp();

"con uses like the fact that 7.5 million people are on issulin pills and 1.5 million need them to stay alive as people. but these pills ar enot cureing them they are just keeping the disease effects down a bit. some keep them the disease from killing them but herbs would do the same exact thing but without the side effects."

Insulin does not "keep the symptoms down" it keeps diabetics alive. You have no basis for claiming natural remedies can cure all disease. Googling "natural alternative for X" then linking the first result without reading it doesn't count as research. Where are the peer-reviewed studies that I've been asking for since round 1?

These are not scientific peer-reviewed journals:

Cinnamon cannot keep diabetics alive. Oregano cannot cure tuberculosis or pneumonia. Red rice is will not stop your body from rejecting a transplanted organ. Medicine is not a conspiracy designed to harm civilization.

Win awarded to: tombos21@gmail.com
Reasoning:
I am voting for Con for numerous reasons. First off, Pro started off using the exact same argument that they have used for every single time they've debated this topic. Next, there's the fact that Pro brought in religion and used older terminology, which Con easily shut down and pointed out as being irrelevant. A debate on prescription medication is a science debate, not a religious or language debate. Then, we have all of Pro's plagiarizing and use of logical fallacies. Most of the time when Pro referenced an article, other than definitions, it appears they just copied and pasted, instead of rewording it. As for the logical fallacies, those were extremely easy to spot. Finally we come to their articles. Most of them were irrelevant and not even valid for this debate. Take ABC News for example. ABC news, is not experienced in the medical field, therefore, anything they have to say on it would be irrelevant and should be taken with a grain of salt. Overall, we saw a great debate from Con. They easily shut down all of Pro's arguments and sent Pro talking in a loop. Also, Con repeated asked for actual, scientific evidence that could support Pro's herb claims and Pro, every time, failed to provide. In the end, Con had much better arguments that were more legible.

Feedback:
crossed- Stop using the same exact arguments. Leave religion out of this debate, same as older definitions. Just because a word meant something else in another language a long time ago, doesn't mean that it still has the same meaning today. Older definitions are irrelevant. Also, work on your grammar.

tombos21@gmail.com- Great job. For reference for future debates. Look closely at any opponent's arguments for plagiarism. If you spot it, point it out in your arguments. That's usually an instant win, since plagiarism is pretty much cheating.
