Firstly, thank you to Vineeth for permitting me to take part in this debate with them.

I wish to state for the record, that my personal thoughts on the subject of the hijab are somewhat uncertain. I do not necessarily support an outright ban, however for the purposes of the debate, I shall be presenting a case as to why it's necessary. As I've said, for the record, this is not necessarily how I personally feel.

The first and most obvious reason for banning the hijab would be that it represents a security risk. The French government has taken this step already, along with the Belgian government, and towns in Spain and Italy have introduced similar laws. The idea is that hijab conceals too much of the face is one upheld not only by governments but also the European Courts, which upheld the French ban.

This alone should serve as ample argument for banning the hijab. At the risk of angering Muslim communities, we now have several European countries taking the position that the hijab is a security risk. This is not an action they would undertake lightly, least of all in the current  climate.

I feel Pro arguments were not solid, but as Con forfeited all rounds I should give this one to Pro.

Feedback:
I feel like pro's arguments were missing an explanation as to the harm. Pro needed to demonstrate more than just banning the hijab being popular - he needed to tell us what the security risk was. Why is not being able to see a person's face problematic?

This might seem obvious, but this opens up many lines of attack. Suddenly the debate can be about everything from a petrol store robbery to outright terrorism, and chaos in the streets. The natural extension of this is the value of law and order.

I understand that it's often harder to do the position you don't agree with (I found it one of the most challenging aspects of debating at first!) but going deeper into the harms, however misguided you might think they are, usually helps with finding new impacts that you otherwise would never even have thought of! :)

Good luck to pro in their future debates, and I hope con sticks around and does a debate one day. Don't be dissuaded!
