Firstly, thank you to Vineeth for permitting me to take part in this debate with them.
I wish to state for the record, that my personal thoughts on the subject of the hijab are somewhat uncertain. I do not necessarily support an outright ban, however for the purposes of the debate, I shall be presenting a case as to why it's necessary. As I've said, for the record, this is not necessarily how I personally feel.
The first and most obvious reason for banning the hijab would be that it represents a security risk. The French government has taken this step already, along with the Belgian government, and towns in Spain and Italy have introduced similar laws. The idea is that hijab conceals too much of the face is one upheld not only by governments but also the European Courts, which upheld the French ban.
This alone should serve as ample argument for banning the hijab. At the risk of angering Muslim communities, we now have several European countries taking the position that the hijab is a security risk. This is not an action they would undertake lightly, least of all in the current climate.
